This colourful Indian textile
measures 1.8 metres X 530 mm. It is covered
with decorative mirrors and ornate and detailed embrodery. The motifs include
stylized flowers and other details which represent generally fertility.
I bought the piece some 22 years ago and kept it wrapped in tissue paper
for some years. Later I displayed it in a mount with small pins holding
one edge.
As it was displayed out of full sun this did not damage the
piece.
I believe it is a lower portion or band of an Indian wedding gown. These
bands are handed down through the family and sewn on each new wedding
gown. Because of its design and the nature of the piece I have no idea
how old it is.
At the latest I would have to say 1960's at the earliest
I would say early this century but it could be very old, if it was
only brought out at weddings.
I was told the above when I bought it and I have reason to believe the
Indian lady who told me probably knew the story. Please note we are talking
Indian not North American Indian here.
This is a marvelous, rare and beautiful piece, worthy of being in a
museum. If you have any other questions don't hestitate to ask. Call
